![]() ![]() It was against this background that I read two comics about the relationship between American Jews and the state of Israel: Sarah Glidden’s How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less, and Not the Israel My Parents Promised Me, a posthumously-published book written by comics pioneer Harvey Pekar and illustrated by J.T. ![]() ![]() Representative Ilhan Omar has been branded an antisemite for her comments on the power of the pro-Israel lobby in Washington, and America has moved to criminalize protest against the Israeli state, accusing such protests of embracing anti-Jewish discourse. At the same time, criticism of the state of Israel is increasingly being framed as inherently antisemitic. This holds true even as Trump unquestionably supports Israel by recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and affirming Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights. ![]() From the close relationships Trump and his supporters fostered with alt-right people and outlets including Steve Bannon, Brietbart, and the Daily Caller, all of whom have been linked to antisemitic statements, to his half-hearted condemnation of a white supremacist rally where participants chanted “Jews will not replace us,” to his retweeting of antisemitic imagery, to his own antisemitic statements, it’s clear that antisemitism is a cornerstone of Trumpism. Since the emergence of Donald Trump as a political figure, antisemitism has found new public acceptability. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Our vehicles are comfortable luxury sedans, servicing people in Qatar since 2004, in providing customer service with highest quality standards of taxi service to include aesthetic appearance, reputed automobile brand, in-vehicle fittings & equipment with latest technology adhering to safety standards, well trained drivers to take the passengers safely to their destination and to reflect the aspirations and image of Qatar at home and outside Qatar.Every car is cleaned inside and outside a twice a day before driver assigns duty of that car. “Karwa” taxis are the most convenient, safe and government owned metered taxi recognized with its unique appearance of turquoise green color. ![]() ![]() ![]() I had deliberately not thought much about what caring for a baby would be like. We could afford to do this because a person can get paid more to sit in front of her computer and send a bunch of e-mails than she can to do a job so crucial and difficult that it seems objectively holy: to clean excrement off a body, to hold a person while they are crying, to cherish them because of and not despite their vulnerability. ![]() My boyfriend and I had just hired a nanny to spend three days a week caring for our baby, to do a kind of work that I’d been shocked to find intimately rewarding but also far harder than anything I’d ever tried to do for eight hours straight. That sentence rattled around in my head for most of seasons one through four of the pandemic, and, once, on a winter night in 2020, when I was struggling to nurse my five-month-old, the bald fact of it made me crumple in tears. “In our society, there seems a general rule that, the more obviously one’s work benefits other people, the less one is likely to be paid for it,” the late anthropologist and activist David Graeber wrote, in 2018. ![]() ![]() ![]() And all he wants is to see Madurai on its knees, its wealth pillaged, its temples destroyed.Īs an ancient city combusts in flames of treachery, bloodlust and revenge, brother will battle brother, ambition will triumph over love, slaves will rise to rule, cities will be razed to dust and the victor will be immortalized in history. ![]() None, not even the mighty Mongols, have defeated him - no empire can withstand the trail of destruction he leaves in his wake. Suddenly, near the end of the story, Capote pulls back the lens and we see the Christmas memory with more context. The story is so warm and content and self-enclosed as the narrator details the many little Christmas traditions he shared with his cousin and friend. The key trick Capote manages, as far as I can tell, is pulling the rug out from under the readers a little bit at the end. Presenting the bulk of the story as a self-enclosed world untouched by time before highlighting the heartbreakingly temporary nature of the rituals A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote, 1956 ![]() ![]() It's a brilliant piece of psychological horror that is both deeply intimate yet expansive in scope, with a large cast of characters that are sucked into the terror in different ways. I had the opportunity to attend a short how-to session with Dave a few years ago (SDCC 09) and this feels like a true extension of that candid and enlightening presentation. This is no more evident than in the Afterword where Dave discusses his thoughts on the future. But for me what makes it stand apart from other "art of" books is that the tone of the text makes it really personal and conveys empathy (not to be confused with sympathy!) for the professional artist. ![]() Don't get me wrong, for those looking for a coffee table art book, this certainly has enough high quality pieces to qualify. Rolling thunder is the culmination of many years of work and does a great job chronicling Dave's career as a working artist, the challenges of pursuing a dream and ensuring you can bring home a paycheck (I know that sounds bad, but that is the reality of being a professional artist!). ![]() |
